When Disaster Strikes So Do The Scammers!

When disasters occur, such as the tornados in Oklahoma, scams appear almost immediately. The scams include fake charities, home repair and cleanup rip-offs, contractor scams, fake disaster officials, and many more.

Oklahoma’s web site has information to help tornado victims.

If your family, home, or friends have been affected by the disaster , it is very important that you take the time to check out any business before hiring them. The FTC’s Disaster Recovery site provides tips and links to help you avoid scams and rip-offs.

You may receive appeals for donations by email, through websites, and social media. Some appeals may even come over the phone. Before contributing, always check out a charity. The BBB Wise Giving Alliance has reports on nationally soliciting charitable organizations. Contact the charity directly, not through an intermediary. For further tips, check out this article from the FTC.
